Google Amp will make reading the news faster, but can it keep the web open?

Google logo on a phone.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/24/google-amp-will-make-reading-the-news-faster-but-can-it-keep-the-web-open

Accelerated Mobile Pages is designed to save readers seconds and make money for publishers online where slow-loading sites can make all the difference. This article is explaining the difference Google is doing with there HTM,L system. This would be changing the web service as to making it quicker and user friendly. This is to save the readers alot of time as to be faster and to actually be clear with the browsing sites. Eliminating those few seconds of delay is important because they can make the difference between someone reading an article and seeing an ad alongside it  and simply abandoning it. Research firm Forrester claims 40% of people will not bother with a shopping website if it takes more than three seconds to load, and that’s when they are looking at something they want to buy.

1. The real test for Google, however, will be whether Amp keeps people on the web, where people use Google search to find what they want, rather than abandoning it in favour of the “walled gardens” of its competitors, chief among them Facebook.

2. Facebook has its own fast lane for news content, Instant Articles, which takes a feed from publishers and turns them into stripped-down pages that also load more quickly. It has two major advantages: it lives inside the world’s largest social network, and, for the moment at least, ad blockers can’t do anything about the ads.

3. Google has built Amp along open principles because it needs the open web to make money. For publishers, that has meant a very different partner to work with. For most consumers on their phones, all that will matter is those few precious seconds saved.

This overall would be making the web browsing experience be better for users. It would be making more profit because of how fast the loading will be on the phones. Google is going into there own way to bring out fast processor for web pages shows the innovation to bring news and information quicker. Those delays are also helping drive the adoption of ad blockers, which on mobile devices can save consumers both time and their data allowance by stopping pages downloading the ads and tracking code that comes with them.Google claims that Amp pages load four times faster and use 10 times less data, and early tests by some publishers suggest it is having an impact.

Trinity Mirror regionals boost web traffic by nearly a quarter

Liverpool Echo: we traffic rose by 31.5% to a daily average of 555,676 in the second half of last year

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/24/trinity-mirrors-regionals-boost-web-traffic-by-nearly-a-quarter

The article explains Trinity Mirror’s network of regional newspapers saw a 24% surge in daily browser numbers to 2.4 million, as users flocked to flagship sites such as the Liverpool Echo, Wales Online and Manchester Evening New. Liverpool Echo soared by more than 30% and Manchester Evening News and Wales Online gained more than 20% in the second half of 2015. This artickle is explaining that the website went up in the year. This would be showing the benefit of getting this newspaper company online so that the local area can use it. This was in the last 6 months that it was boosting up and came with the statement of saying “Focus on digital became further embedded in our regional newsrooms in 2015,” said David Higgerson, digital publishing director at Trinity Mirror Regionals. “Our journalists live by analytics, identifying what readers want to read and working hard to keep them coming back by producing content that drive a locally engaged audience. Examples of this include the audience spikes during the Manchester gangland disputes, Hillsborough inquest in Liverpool and wild weather across the north in December.” They feel encouraged by the boost and hope to make more progress.

1. There were strong boosts in web traffic for the Manchester Evening News, which increased its daily browser numbers by 25% to 693,315; the Liverpool Echo, up by 31.5% to 555,676; Wales Online, which rose by 26.2% to 327,000; and the Birmingham Mail, which increased by 17% to 230,651.

2. Johnston Press, the owner of titles including the Yorkshire Post and the Scotsman, saw regional website traffic rise by 7% to 1.04 million average daily browsers in the period.

3. Local World, which was acquired by Trinity Mirror last year, increased daily browsers across its website network by 2.7% to 1,262,144.

In my opinion i believe this is good because it gives the information to the audience and it is also for a big part out of London which people would want to check online as for example this is a problem for people as to not having any local news in area big as Manchester and Liverpool. This is a good boost and hopefully it will rise and maybe the newspaper industry for this will go down as to people mostly using technology.

Identities and Film: blog task

1) Read Media Factsheet 142: Identity and Film.

2) Complete the Twenty Statements Test yourself. This means answering the question ‘Who am I?’ 20 times with 20 different answers. What do they say about your identity? Write the 20 answers in full on your blog.
Who am i? I am a xbox gamer
Who am i? I am a comic nerd
Who am i? I am a student
Who am i? I am a male
Who am i? I am a lazy person
Who am i? I am a Arsenal fan
Who am i? I am Batman
Who am i? I am going to try youtubing one day
Who am i? I am a helper

Who am i? I am a caring person
Who am i? I am a understanding person
Who am i? I am in year 13
Who am i? I am forgiving

3) Classify your answers into the categories listed  on the Factsheet: Social groups, ideological beliefs, interests etc.

Social and self evaluation : I am a student, I am a male, I am studying media, i am studying applied business, i am in year 13, i am going to be 18 in June, I am a caring person, i am a helper, i am a understanding person and i am a forgiving person.

Interests: I am a arsenal fan, i am a xbox gamer, i am a comic nerd, i am batman and i am a music fan.

Ambitions: I am going to university, i am batman and i am going to try youtubing one day

4) Go back to your favourite film (as identified in the lesson). What does this choice of film say about your identity? Are there any identities within the film (e.g. certain characters) that particularly resonated with your values and beliefs?

My favourite film is Groundhog day with Bill Murray as to the reason of how his belief is to be selfish and only help himself where he starts repeating the day he becomes selfless and falls in love over and over again. The film shows that i like to see people become better and i would want to be a hero like him and have the chance to change like that. This film shows that society can change and a simple selfish man can.

5) Watch the trailers for the five films highlighted as examples of gay/lesbian representation in mainstream film. How are LGBT identities constructed in the trailers and how are audiences encouraged to respond to these representations?

Wilde the story of Oscar Wilde and the realization of his homosexuality caused Wilde enormous torment as he juggled marriage, fatherhood and responsibility with his obsessive love for Lord Alfred Douglas. The concept of fatherhood makes it harder to be accepted to be a gay.

Philadelphia Fearing it would compromise his career, lawyer Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) hides his homosexuality and HIV status at a powerful Philadelphia law firm. But his secret is exposed when a colleague spots the illness's telltale lesions.

The Wedding Banquet The Wedding Banquet is a 1993 film about a gay Taiwanese immigrant man who marries a mainland Chinese woman to placate his parents and get her a green card.

The Kids Are Alright Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore) are a married lesbian couple living in the Los Angeles area.

Pride (2014) London-based gays and lesbians lend their support to striking coal miners in 1984 Wales.

Collective identity: blog task

1) Read the article and summarise each section in one sentence, starting with the section 'Who are you?'

Explains the different of who are, who we want to be and who we want to be seen as the exmaples of media is influencing us all.

Who are you section is the idea of digital media and out identities to be fixed and knwon.

From citizen to consumer explain how and when the idea is constructed identities came into society.

The rise of the individual explains  how we are different with different factors as to how we act to people in a individual way.

Branding and life style is how brands and us are associated and how we take there products to individually show us.

2) List five brands you are happy to be associated with and explain how they reflect your sense of identity.
Samsung
Microsoft
Nike
Addidas
Sony

They all reflect to me as to being a teenager and also for being modern it shows i am a mainstream person and shows that like to associated with technology.

3) Do you agree with the view that modern media is all about 'style over substance'? What does this expression mean?

I agree as people only care mostly about the presentation then the information being shown in society and how modern media is taken as people most want videos now.

4) Explain Baudrillard's theory of 'media saturation' in one paragraph. You may need to research it online to find out more.

reality we live in is not actual reality and is actually constructed by the media to make us think that it is reality. The term hyper-real is used to explain this. Essentially the media bombards us with various advertisements and other things to make us live the reality constructed by the elites.

5) Is your presence on social media an accurate reflection of who you are? Have you ever added or removed a picture from a social media site purely because of what it says about the type of person you are?

My presence on social media is not really who i am i believe that when i do communicate i may be shown boring or just plain but really i like to do more. As a person i believe that i like to show what i do and express my love to film and comics.

6) What is your opinion on 'data mining'? Are you happy for companies to sell you products based on your social media presence and online search terms? Is this an invasion of privacy?

I think its a good idea if it thinks you will like this products because of searches you have made then it should be alright maybe its something the person was looking for and companies want to sell us there product which will suit a person so they dont keep giving random products.

Sun website traffic up by more than 25%

The Sun: website traffic was up more than a quarter in January

 http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/18/sun-website-traffic-news-uk-abcs

The Sun saw its web traffic soar by more than 25% in January, a welcome recovery after it lost audience in the previous month. Its website recorded a 5% month-on-month fall in average daily web browsers in December, despite dropping its paywall fully for the first time on 30 November. News UK chiefs brushed off the decline, blaming it on issues including “certain apps” being turned off in the transition to free access, and a seasonal lull in fantasy football game Dream Team.

1. Mail Online 14,759,451 (+11.96%)
theguardian.com 8,764,814 (+11.69%)
Telegraph 4,611,564 (+14.19%)
Mirror Group Nationals 4,822,666 (+20.74%)
The Independent 3,331,403 (+19.14%)
The Sun 1,909,955 (+25.19%)
Metro 1,418,152 (+26.93%)
Express.co.uk 1,399,663 (+31.38%)
Dailystar.co.uk 901,334 (+51.68%)

2. Mail Online grew by almost 12%, theguardian.com rose 11.70%, Telegraph.co.uk surged by 14.19%, the Mirror jumped by 20.74% and theindependent.co.uk saw browser numbers rise by 19.14%.

3.  dailystar.co.uk saw huge growth of 51.68% month on month in January, albeit from its base as the smallest of the national newspaper websites.

Newspapers industries have gone up in stats and i believe that this is good because it means that there wont be a decline that was big before. It shows the adapting industries are all coming up and it would mean that The Sun  paywall going only had a small decrease but then went back up after the month and will come up with better ideas to make the percentage of readers.

Block ads? That only makes you more attractive to advertisers

Users of adblockers such as Adblock Plus could be ‘leveraged as a high-value segment’, according to a new report

Report says users of adblockers are likely to be tech-savvy and see fewer ads overall. People who use adblockers when using the web could be some of the most valuable people to show ads to, according to the article this would be the idea of actually still giving advertisement. As to having to cost for these ads to go away .The report’s authors say people who block ads could generate more money for publishers because they are likely to be tech savvy and in the “millennial” age range that advertisers want to reach, are less likely to be bots (computers posing as humans), and are likely to see fewer ads overall.

1. Adblocking is one of a number of growing threats to online publishers that rely on advertising. The practice has been on the rise in recent years, particularly on desktops and laptops.

2. PageFair, which sells services to publishers to measure and attempt to counteract adblocking and contributed to the report, has estimated that total lost revenue from adblocking grew from $5.8bn to $10.7bn between 2014 and 2015 in the US, $1.6bn to $3.6bn over the same period in the UK.

3. The report also warns that publishers should be wary of relying too heavily on so-called “walled gardens” offered by tech companies such as Facebook and Snapchat, which offer ways to provide content with ads that can’t currently be blocked. It says that not only do these platforms gain a high degree of control over the content, but they may also eventually be subject to adblocking themselves.

The company also predicts the total lost revenue from ad blocking could $41.4bn this year. However, the figures are an approximate calculation based on total revenue and adblocking rates, meaning the real figures could be significantly lower or higher. In my opinion ad blocks should be free and should be allowed to access what we want to have pop up or not we dont have the control of this and it will be a struggle as ads pop up alot now.

Daily Mirror publisher to launch 20p newspaper New Day

The publisher of the Daily Mirror is to launch a cut-price newspaper, New Day, on 28 February.

 http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/17/daily-mirror-newspaper-new-day

The publisher of the Daily Mirror is to launch a new national newspaper at the end of the month, just weeks after the Independent announced it was dropping its print edition. Cut-price title is expected to target the same mid-market audience as the Mail and Express. The article is about the ideas that daily mail has and believes it will be getting attention. It is expected to be initially priced at about 20p, the same price as the cut-price national i when it launched in 2010, but will be raised depending on reader demand.

1.Johnston Press, the new owner of the i, was quick to differentiate its new acquisition from New Day.

2.One source briefed on the launch said that while the ultimate pricing was fluid it is has been described as ultimately being “anywhere up to under £1”.

3.In September, Richard Desmond attempted to start a tabloid price war by slashing the cost of the Daily Star in half to 20p.

I think its a bad idea if its the newspaper industry as they are slowly dying and just going down more in the business yes its competition but its competition which is going end bad for all the newspapers. This is a big risk for the daily mirror and i believe if they do this it would be a big risk and advertisement would be helping in this.

Facebook apologises for blocking Viz magazine's page

Viz magazine’s page was removed ‘in error’ by Facebook.

 http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/17/facebook-viz-magazine-page

Facebook has apologised for blocking Viz magazine’s brand page in “error”. The frequently foul-mouthed comic, a parody of titles such as The Beano and Dandy, took to Twitter on Monday to air its grievance at being blocked to its 150,000 followers.Because of the foul language being used in the magazine this article would be showing that Facebook removed it as to the content and that it was an error this still shows no evidence.

1. Facebook has to monitor a large volume of content posted on a daily basis and on occasion legitimate pages like Viz are mistakenly blocked.

2.  Enforcement is handled by a “community operations team” that includes both a manual and automated review of conten

3.  Facebook moved to block the page for an unexplained breach of those rules.

In my opinion this would show that Facebook has its rules and that they should own up to mistakes instead of the errors.  The content if too excessive should be removed if too far to social networking websites.

The Intercept admits reporter fabricated stories and quotes

Juan Thompson

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/02/the-intercept-fires-reporter-juan-thompson

Digital magazine The Intercept has fired reporter Juan Thompson after discovering “a pattern of deception” in his reporting. In a note to readers, editor-in-chief Betsy Reed revealed that Thompson had fabricated quotes in several stories and created email accounts in order to impersonate people. This article is about Juan Thompson who bent the truth and made mistakes with several stories and also acted as other people.

1.  “Thompson admitted to creating fake email accounts and fabricating messages, but stood by his published work. He did not cooperate in the review,” Reed wrote.

2.  This article has was updated on 2 February 2016 to include new information from WBEZ contradicting a statement on The Intercept website that Thompson had been a reporter there.

3. Thompson has recently tweeted about being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

I believe that this has to be checked on before hand and if this is more than once should go through the reporters work and see if has down this before. The deception would mess with audience ideology in the future of why we dont trust new digital media and this would be a big example this and in my opinion  is good that he got fired and that they should look more into his work and edit it truthfully.

Identities and the Media: Feminism

1) Read Playing With The Past: Post-feminism and the Media (MM40, page 64 - our Media Magazine archive is here).

2) What are the two texts the article focuses on?
 Pan Am (Tv series)

Beyonce's 'Why dont you love me' (Music video)

3) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)?

Pan Am would be representing the male gaze as to the picture shown they are stewardesses but by the way of the clothing is sophisticated. an image whose purpose is to be admired and aspired to by women, and visually enjoyed by men.also with Beyonce it would be meaning of how she is idolized as to be represented as an independent woman. vintage style bra, Fifties pedal pushers with cats-eye-shaped glasses, suspenders and stockings which all allow the audiences to not only appreciate BeyoncĂ©’s ‘credentials’ but also the vintage fashion on offer. The make-up also utilises the classic 1950s

4) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form?

Texts like this  are not reinforced to feminism as to women always being objectified by mean by how they dressed. such as wearing provocative clothing there will always be judgment upon it and it would make men find it more appealing as to the music video. I believe there is still a sexism approach as to Pan Am characters of being stewardesses and for Beyonce parodying in her music video.

5) Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog.

Post-feminism – An ideology in culture and society that society is somehow past needing feminism and that the attitudes and arguments of feminism are no longer needed.

Third wave feminism – Was a movement that redefined and encouraged women to be dominant and sexually assertive.

Feminism – A movement aimed at defining, establishing, and defending women’s rights and equality to men.

No More Page 3

1) Research the No More Page 3 campaign. Who started it and why?

 August 22, 2012, Lucy-Anne Holmes

2) What are the six reasons the campaign gives for why Page 3 has to go?

3) Read this debate in the Guardian regarding whether the campaign should be dropped. What are Barbara Ellen and Susan Boniface's contrasting opinions in the debate?

The belief of Barbara Ellen is that page 3 should go because of the way it represents women and Susan Boniface believes that the campaign should not be exisating and should go away.

4) How can the No More Page 3 campaign be linked to the idea of post-feminism?

The campaign represents women as being more than objects to be just for not show but can be aroleodel to all other women and the campaign is stopping page 3 from making women feel less than themselves.

5) What are your OWN views on the No More Page 3 campaign. Do you agree with the campaign's aims? Should the campaign continue?

I believe the campaign should continue its a newspaper shouldnt even be shown. There are younger people who would look at this and would get the ideology that women can be just objects and i believe that its wrong the aims of the campaign is goods and i believe that they should keep going,

6) Do you agree that we are in a post-feminist state or is there still a need for feminism?

Feminism is always going to be needed as to many factors of women being in society they are still not enough where there is equality in a work station and should be still pushed. There are traditions which all get in the way of this and i believe that feminism is still needed and going to be for the next few years where we are perfectly equal for everything.

Ex-Channel 4 chairman says BBC licence fee is an 'anomaly'

Lord Burns, who was giving an “exit interview” to the House of Lords communications committee.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/02/ex-channel-4-chairman-bbc-licence-fee-is-an-anomaly

Former channel boss Lord Burns argues BBC charter is ‘unclear’ and that Channel 4 should be allowed to seek joint ventures instead of being privatised. The licence fee has served the BBC very well ... but we are moving into a world where switching off non-payers becomes increasingly possible and the licence fee is an anomaly.” This article explains whether if the BBC is being smart about the future of the license fee. Overall this article is about BBC and the future of channel 4 if they should do the same or if use commercial as there money in still.

1. Last week, Ofcom announced easyJet deputy chairman Charles Gurassa as the next chairman of Channel 4.

2. “We do it on the advertising front and do it with the makers of programmes. More freedom to do more in joint ventures and borrowing more money to invest in other activities, that does make sense [for Channel 4],” he said. “Freedom to do that is one of the advantages one would have outside of public sector [restraints that Channel 4 operates under].”

3. hannel 4, which is state-owned but commercially funded through advertising, has just £500m in reserves and assets.

In my opinion i was thinking that all the industry needs is money and if they do cut off the users maybe they will make users pay and that advertisement will give more money. However the future of these channels should stay free as to the entertainment business will still be the same either way and they would probably pay less if the users get cut off. This in my opinion shouldnt be changed and should be just the same and dont think it will change.

Class research task

Emma Barnett: female journalists targeted
1) Summarise this example for the rest of the class in one paragraph
In the Huffington post it is discussed upon twitter trolls and how they would say to journalists abusive things online but would say it in real life. In this case three journalists all got the same tweet that they were going to get bombed this would leave Emma one of the journalists going to the Pub and  Hadley Freeman leaving her house and letting the police look around for any sign of bombs. The view on this would be its just 'Banter' but this could be a real problem at the time and it would mean that there is danger. This article is explaining the threats these women journalists get and how they have to ignore it and get on with life.2) What was the initial incident or situation that sparked this example?
It was the tweet being send to all three journalists at the same time making it a big issue. the spark which made this would mean that they all have a accurate time as to 10:47 being the time. it was also a bad incident as to being an act of feminism for what they do and work on.
3) In your opinion, is this an example of a valid campaign or something of a witchhunt against people who are not doing any serious harm?
This is an example that with the trolls aiming at all of these three female journalists this could off led them to be harmed as to thinking there was a bomb in their house and it would mean that someone is targeting them. this in my opinion is a witchhunt against these journalists and what they stand. I believe that it was a dangerous tweet to do even if it was a troll should'nt be aiming this to people you dont know and especially with bomb threats.

Ched Evans: petition to prevent convicted rapist playing
1) Summarise this example for the rest of the class in one paragraph
Ched Evans got petitioned to not play football again in any other team this would be because of the conviction of rape that he did. From my own knowledge i know that Jessica Ennis didnt want him to go to his new club having over 100,000 signatures leading to big problem for the footballer. This was to believe that the petition states he should not play for the act of being convicted for rape and should not be a idol,

2) What was the initial incident or situation that sparked this example?
Being convicted for rape and also for celebrities and other athletes pushing this like Jessica Ennis

3) In your opinion, is this an example of a valid campaign or something of a witchhunt against people who are not doing any serious harm?
In my opinion i believe that this is a valid campaign as for a family parents would not want children to idolize a man who has raped someone and still plays football. it is to show the punishment of what happens after. This in my opinion i  believe is good as to the reason of people having a voice of the team they support. From another view i know its his career but for the actions he had done it would mean that people can still judge and give petition because of the girl who life has changed.

Caroline Criado-Perez: female presence on banknotes
1) Summarise this example for the rest of the class in one paragraph
Caroline Criado-Perez: 'Twitter has enabled people to behave in a way they wouldn't face to face' This would be because she petitioned for the bank notes to have a woman on there and it led to alot of threat online making it worse as to making her making a big article on how men treat women. She is determined to defeat the trolls and this main article ended up  being a campaign as she wanted fight against the men who are not feminist.

2) What was the initial incident or situation that sparked this example?
When the petition was made to change the bank notes and threats started.

3) In your opinion, is this an example of a valid campaign or something of a witchhunt against people who are not doing any serious harm?
In my opinion i believe it is a fair campaign because it is wrong to threaten someone who just wanted equality. The problem was that if there was no threats and just normal then it would of been a fine situation but because there was many sexist comment it led to the situation to get larger and i believe that this deserves to be fair campaign as to people giving threats to a woman who just wanted more equality on a bank note.
