Feminism: blog task

Watch the Beyonce video for ‘Why Don’t You Love Me?’

1) How might this video contribute to Butler’s idea that gender roles are a ‘performance’?

I would go with Butlers Idea of gender sterotype roles and how Beyonce in my opinion  is parodying the role as for example cleaning and knowing nothing about vehicles and staying inside the house. Also by the line 'Men dont care about how smart i am' and it showed the fix point of women not being noticed by how women are smart but how they look as she is wearing tight clothes. The performance overall is giving the gender stereotype as being fixed in that era as to being based where women would only be known for being a house wife and is taking a parody of that.

2) Would McRobbie view Beyonce as an empowering role model for women?

Mcrobbie views of Beyonce would be that its okay for a woman to be glamorous and this would mean that it to please them selves. Another reason would be empowering women was that it was based in the late 1900s so this would be after war. This would also be about lyrics as to saying that men dont care about may things and it just her looks who have got the audience gazed, Beyonce is a role model because of this as she is giving a parody to all of this and McRobbie aim is to show the perspective is can be feminist and wear what Beyoce is reading.

3) What are your OWN views on this debate – does Beyonce empower women or reinforce the traditional ‘male gaze’ (Mulvey)?

My view on this debate is that Beyonce is parodying the stereotype and its brilliant because when you listen to the lyrics she is saying men dont care about brains or anything. However she uses the Male gaze where she uses are looks as a distraction and she in my opinion is challenging the view of this as to not really cleaning properly as to cleaning or washing. Another would be that she is reinforcing as to the roles but because she is a icon of an independent women shows all her grammys and her cleaning them as to parodying the sterotype basing it on that time set.

Post-colonialism: Edward Said blog task

1) Summarise the three theorists we have looked at: Alvarado, Fanon and Said.

Alvarado would be the four categories of Pity, Humour, Dangerous and Exotic and this can be different representations.

Fanon would be putting on a "white mask"

Said would be the means of West vs East but west will always be superior.

2) Watch the opening of Yasmin (2004) again. Does it offer a positive or negative view of British Muslims? To what extent does it reinforce or challenge Edward Said's theory of Orientalism - that the west is superior to the exotic or uncivilised east?

In Yasmin it shown positives and negatives in the film as for example it would show the boy who is reading the Quran showing traditional values. However you would see the negative as to the woman not wearing her hijab with the man and she was at a pub where you see that men are staring at her for the way she is. Also for the belief when she orders the juice the man stares. Another negative view which reinforces Edward Said theory is the fact of the police was asking questions and telling her come out her vehicle as to her not making no problems. A moment where it is shown to be reinforced would be the boy having the peanut butter and is shown to be western cultured and it is shown very different to all the others as to showing no tradition at all. This was shown exotic by the old man and the Islam community still being shown.

3) Finally, choose THREE clips for EACH of the theorists and explain how you could apply that theory to the clip. Pick a selection of clips on YouTube from TV, film, music video or advertising and embed them in your blog before writing your analysis under each clip. Note: this means you need NINE clips in total on this blogpost.

Alvarado
Get Hard- They use humour of Kevin Hart as the representation and you also see the pity as to Will Ferrel is paying him to teach how to 'Get hard' this would be an good example as for the two comedians and representation of the stereotype of Black people in prison.

Blade- This would show the dangerous representation as to swords and violence is being shown in this clip. It is represented dangerous as to death at the end of it. This is shown the violent part as to also showing the pity of both representation as to the characters fighting for their life and its good vs bad.

Get Rich or Die Tryin- This would be another example of dangerous representation and it would mean that Alvarado theory would be correct as to the four categories made as to Dangerous stereotype and it would show as to the guns being raised at people.

Fanon
Djando unchagined- is shown as Samuel L Jackson showing hes putting on the 'White mask'As the movie is shown against black people Samuel Jackson is also shown Racist against black people and acts like he has the same power of Leonardo Dicaprio.

Norbit- This represent decivilize in the clip, this would show by the two pimps checking up on girls and having the stereotype of a black men.

Samuel L Jackson. We all don't look alike- This clip shows the essentialize as to the line 'We all look same' as to the reporter makes the mistake of another actor and Samuel L Jackson having ago about that.

Said
Four lions- This represents West vs East as to Four Lions tells the story of a group of British jihadists who push their abstract dreams of glory to the breaking point.

Iron man- This exactly reinforces the theory as to West vs East as to iron man stopping the people from being killed by eastern people and would represent them as to terrorists.

Team America : World Police- West vs East representation is shown here as to an american puppet is walking next to islamic people and it would show the conflict between them comedically.

BuzzFeed faces $11m defamation lawsuit from viral news agency

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/27/buzzfeed-lawsuit-central-european-news-michael-leidig

BuzzFeed is being sued for $11m (£7.7m) by a news agency and its founder over an article titled “The King of Bullsh*t News”. Central European News, founded and run by British journalist Michael Leidig, has launched a US legal action claiming that BuzzFeed’s 7,000-word article deliberately set out to damage its business.“The BuzzFeed story accuses Mr Leidig, an experienced and award-winning journalist, of the worst thing you can accuse a journalist of – fraud,” said Harry Wise, the New York-based lawyer representing CEN and Leidig. “It is unfortunate that BuzzFeed refuses to recognise that its story is completely unfounded, and has done terrible damage to Mr Leidig and his company. We look forward to demonstrating those things in court.” This article is suppose to show that Buzz feed have disrespected this writer.

1. He launched his legal action after failing to get BuzzFeed UK to remove the article.

2.It said that the Daily Mirror, its second biggest client, said it would now use CEN stories only “if it was absolutely necessary”.

3.CEN said that sales of stories, which generally hovered around 900 a month before the BuzzFeed article was published, have dropped by about 30%.

In my opinion if this was about any other person who wasnt in journalism and was just in a business this would mean nothing. But because its a well respected journalist known for trying hard it made a different. The lawsuit shouldnt be that high as to writing article which was giving an opinion of someone as to they do this all the time. The news is suppose to be about the truth and if the person didnt like it then should be left. and the man who was suing said before he just wanted it removed and an apology. But it got worse so maybe it was buzz feeds fault.

Daily Mail website's ad revenues surge as paper announces price hike

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/28/daily-mail-websites-ad-revenues-surge-as-paper-prepares-for-price-hike

Mail Online ad income soared by 27% in the fourth quarter, driven by US growth – but it was not enough to offset print decline. The owner of the Daily Mail has said that Mail Online boosted its ad revenues by 27% in the final three months of last year, as it announced that the paper is to increase its cover price for the first time in three years. The article is explaining about the decline in the newspaper industry they are facing and have increased in their advertisement. this would mean that the daily male will be increasing its cover price to 65p in February.

1.DMG Media, the division which includes the Mail business, Metro and Elite Daily, said that in the four weeks since 27 December total underlying ad revenues are down 12% year on year.

2.Daintith said print revenues fell 20% in the four-week period, while digital grew by just 11%.

3.DMGT announced on Thursday that the Daily Mail is to increase its cover price from 60p to 65p from 1 February, its first increase in three years.

In my opinion we know that new digital media is taking over news and mail online doing this would mean they are to survive as long as they can. The online sources online are free and if they do higher the prices they would be in threat as to the demographic they are going for are now using new technology and would not go for traditional paper but go on their phones for news.

The Sun drops standalone politics site

Sun Nation: launched with a video of ‘a day in the life’ of David Cameron.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/21/the-sun-politics-site-sun-nation

The article is about The Sun has called time on its standalone politics site, less than a year after it launched as a “loud and disruptive” platform for stories outside the title’s paywall. The Sun has called time on its standalone politics site, less than a year after it launched as a “loud and disruptive” platform for stories outside the title’s paywall. This article explains that the launch of standalone politics site was not a good idea as a way for social media. For example it was only meant to stay for the elections then go it was only said to be an 'Experiemnt'.

1.The spokesperson said: “With the Sun’s online content now freely available we felt it was no longer necessary for a standalone politics site, but the same brilliant political exclusives, funnies and virals will still be available.”

2.At the time, the Sun website editor, Tim Gatt, described the project as an “experiment” and said there was no guarantee it would keep running after the election.

3.Sun began making an increasing number of stories on its main website free to read last summer, and by the end of November had dropped its paywall entirely, removing much of the rationale for the standalone site.

This would be move for The Sun to pick if wanted to remove it. If they believe it was only an experiment then it was only for the election. This would be because the paywall is gone and there is free content what is the point of a standalone where they can just put it on The Sun it would be easier and not loud and disruptive like they said. It wouldnt make a big difference as the online content should have more readers for politics but the experiment shown it went wrong if they did get rid of it.

Daily Mail takes full control of Australian website

Mail Online Australia front page

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/15/daily-mail-takes-full-control-of-australian-website

The Daily Mail has ended its joint venture with Nine Entertainment and taken full control of its Australian news and entertainment website. The two companies, which described the decision as mutual, announced the joint venture in 2013 with the newsroom opening in Sydney on 1 January 2014 Nine Entertainment joint venture ends as Mail Online’s global chief executive says 100% ownership is best business model. This article is explaining that the Australian website has been fully controlled by the daily mail.

1.Taking full control of the Australian business brings it in line with the Daily Mail’s US and UK digital operations, which are wholly owned by DMGT.

2.The Daily Mail Australia has approximately 2 million monthly readers and has operations in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

3.DMGT said the change in ownership will not affect management, with Peter Holder, managing director of the Australian business, continuing to report to Clarke.

As this big ownership change has happened means the daily mail can make more as 2 million reader are made monthly. I believe that this could be a good idea for daily mail as they are globalising but it would mean a bad idea for other news sources and it would mean that more readers would be looking at the daily mail which is a right wing news industry and this may be a bad idea as to more readers seeing very biased opinions and i believe this is the struggle as its just more power for the right wing.

Identities: Post-colonial theory & blog tasks

Post-colonialism: blog task

1) Read the excellent article exploring the different representations of black people in British film and TV from Media Magazine 42 (MM42 from our Media Magazine archive - page 51)

2) List FIVE films, FIVE TV programmes and FIVE online-only productions that are discussed in the article.

Films-
Anuvahood
Kidulthood
Shank
Attack on the block
The mirror boy

TV programmes-
Fresh prince of bell-air
The real mcoy
3 Non-Blonde
Hackney Empire’s 291 Club
Casualty

Online-
Brothers With No Game
Venus vs Mars
The Ryan Sisters
All About The McKenzies
Meet The Adebanjos

3) Watch Destiny Ekaragha's clips above (more of her work is available on her website, including the short film The Park). To what extent can we apply Alvarado's and Fanon's theories to these films? Do they reinforce or subvert typical black stereotypes in British film and TV? Refer to specific scenes and events in the clips in answering this question and aim for at least 350 words.

From the short film called Tight jeans uses Alvarado's theory of being humorous as to the three boys sitting talking in a comedic way about white people penis's and black peoples. This is by using the stereotype which is always said by people in a comedic way. They also represent themselves in a very Dangerous way as well as for example when the man is walking passed them in the video is slightly given by that fear that he walks faster and looks away. This would give the representation of danger that the man is giving when walking. From this theory Alavarado works as to the representation of humour as to the way they are laughing at each other and also danger by the stereotype still given. For Fanon's theories work as to 'putting on the white mask' as to giving the representation of not the culture. Primitivize is one of the methods that is used when they are talking about heritage and not correct information but information about slavery. This would be primitivize is when they give the stereotype of the genitals of black men and also what the white people at those times would do. This would be typical humour used in TV series or movies. Another piece would be Gone too far which is a trailer representing the theory of Alvarado of Humour such as the brother coming in and singing in the end and also the humour of the family. There is also the sense of Danger as to the girls boyfriend who was threatens the main character. For Fanon there is the 'Putting the white mask on' As his family is very cultured but he picks to be different and would like to represented differently to them. This would also be primitivize as his family very cultured for example his mother being the way she is dressed. This represents the stereotype to be true as culture does stay but is different with the main character which presents it as it can change. The stereotypes overall can be shown to be reinforced and alternative as to the main character not being cultured in Gone too far or the three character in Tight jeans. However it can be shown as it being reinforced in Gone too far as to the accent and the way they are represented in costume in Gone too far and in Tight jeans it is represented by ideology of black men stereotype that they have bigger penises then white men creating different representations.

13C: January assessment learner response

Grade- D (22 marks)

1) Type up your feedback in full:
WWW: Clear positives here - you've clearly revised. The essay contains much of what you need some theories, examples and focus on case study.

EBI: Does not link to the question or debate, example would be Baudrillard: the perfect theory for this question but your point shows no relevance or understanding to the theory. you have good quotes but they seem be thrown randomly: you dont discuss or apply them. Need to focus on the question.

2) Read through the mark scheme. Out of the six different statements, write which you think is currently your strongest and which is weakest. Explain WHY and, for the weakest, what you are going to do to improve in that area.

Strongest: Adequate understanding of new and digital media.
Issues and theories and contexts used.

Weakness: A satifactory essay showing critical autonomy
Lack of focus in the question

3) Read through the exemplar A grade essay. What does this essay offer that yours does not? Identify THREE things you can take from this essay to improve your own responses in future.

1. Examples and linking them to the question. This would mean by the quotes and theory i give use examples in wider context.

2. Have statics on the decline of newspaper. This would be giving percentages and also the viewer-ship of newspapers.

3. Have everything link and have it focus on the question . I lacked in following the question and in the A grade essay it follows.

4) Write ONE new paragraph for your January assessment essay. Ideally, this should be a section you did not cover in your original essay. This paragraph needs to be comprehensive and meet the criteria for Level 4 of the mark scheme.

In an environment where audiences can consume information and use technology everywhere show it is can be trusted. For example we have User generated content which is shown from our own opinions. From this we have communicated globally without any barriers being held as for example the Eric Garner case came back because of the voice of people. This would also mean that in that case it got the people wanting to say that it was the police who was the blame of the death as Eric Garner didn't do anything. This show trust as it was a community of people doing this and it was growing. With new digital media we have been in an environment where we have user generated content which gives us more trusted information. However it could be argued as citizen journalism is made that i can be wrong and the environment we live in is not true as we thought. It can be still seen as "million monkeys typing nonsense" this would be a quote which links with marxist view that its all just written can we really trust where we get our information? The environment we live in now with new digital media is highly trusted as technology is the number one essential to people lives and they want to be updated and it is trust worthy as to news update on weather and incidents that happen as we can check on different sources.

Identities and the Media: Reading the riots

  1. How did the language and selection of images in the coverage create a particular representation of young people?

Representing the riots as to people who were wild and didn't know what they were doing. In the magazine they use word 'childish'. In the magazine they explain that news articles use they were represented as only young people who was doing this. They represented young people as to be destructive. The images used in the media magazine show the image of the newspaper being a young man. This gives the representation of young people as being dangerous.
  2. Why does David Buckingham mention Owen Jones and his work Chavs: the demonisation of the working class?

In the media magazine David Buckingham mentions Own Jones book Chavs as to there being fair points of a new form of class and contempt in modern Britain. The points are given that the object of youth has become fear and ridicule. Fact that it wasnt entirely the youth which was doing this.
  3. What is the typical representation of young people – and teenage boys in particular? What did the 2005 IPSOS/MORI survey find?

From the survey it has shown that 40% of newspaper articles featuring young people focused on violence, crime or anti social behaviour and 71% could be described as having a negative tone. This gives the representation that it was a negative tone to the youth and that it was described that young people was focused on celebrities and footballers and most frequently n violent crime.
  4. How can Stanley Cohen’s work on Moral Panic be linked to the coverage of the riots?

Stanley Cohen analysed media coverage on the riots, Cohen argues that the media pay of role was 'deviance amplification' in reporting the phenomenon and in the expressing the fear and the outrage of respectable society. The media did not simple misrepresent of what happened moral are not just irrational responses but its the inaccurate content of what happen and why.
  5. What elements of the media and popular culture were blamed for the riots?
They blamed the entertainment side of music and films as to the coverage shown as to what they were shown. This would also link to blaming video games as the newspapers would relate it to video games. as for example they would use the factors of violence being used in the games that they use it in real life.
  6. How was social media blamed for the riots? What was interesting about the discussion of social media when compared to the Arab Spring in 2011?

Social media was blamed for the riots as to people communicating as to asking each other where to meet up . This is compare to the Arab spring in 2011 as to the use of technology being used. As for example they would use Twitter and Facebook as for example they would express their support and it was more accessible.
  7. The riots generated a huge amount of comment and opinion - both in mainstream and social media. How can the two-step flow theory be linked to the coverage of the riots?

Two step flow theory can be linked to the coverage as to the leaders of this as i would say that the media were the one who were giving a leading opinion saying that i was the youth. On social media it was shown as well that the two step flow can be taken as the people charge of media as to presenting stories that it was the youth.
  8. Alternatively, how might media scholars like Henry Jenkins view the 'tsunami' of blogs, forums and social media comments? Do you agree that this shows the democratisation of the media?

New media is about to say what they want online and from all of these blogs, forums and social media comments i would agree it does show a democratisation of the media. We have been given a voice to have the opinion of the news. From 'tsunami' given of all of these blogs and comments. It is to show society of what people think and that to show they have power to change as well.
  9. What were the right-wing responses to the causes of the riots?

Right wing conservatives say that the young people are to blame for the riots. The right wing responses was that it should be the young people fault and that there actions were wrong. Gives the point that young people are 'Destructiveand 'idiotic' without nor reason
  10. What were the left-wing responses to the causes of the riots?

Left wing would be represented as the young people faults are denied and that the cause of it was on other people too. It would be that society will blame the youth as to not listen to reasons.
  11. What are your OWN views on the main causes of the riots?

The riots in my views was a shouting of actions for people let out rage. this would be the youth budgets going down and the reason of disagreements. It would be the reason of also poverty in my opinion it was a bundle of problems and the people tried everything.
  12. How can capitalism be blamed for the riots? What media theory (from our new/digital media unit) can this be linked to?

Capitalism  would be partly the blame of it because poverty and it would be the reason of markets. Another reason why the riots happened was because of inflation as well and how prices were going up. This would be the reason of why there was looting.
  13. Were people involved in the riots given a voice in the media to explain their participation?

People in  the riots got judged and it would of meant that people blamed the youth of this which it was not entirely them. This would also lead to the point that the voice was taken into consideration but it was the actions which made it be ignored.
  14. In the Guardian website's investigation into the causes of the riots, they did interview rioters themselves. Read this Guardian article from their Reading the Riots academic research project - what causes are outlined by those involved in the disturbances?

Many rioters conceded that their involvement in looting was simply down to opportunism, saying that a perceived suspension of normal rules presented them with an opportunity to acquire goods and luxury items they could not ordinarily afford. They often described the riots as a chance to obtain "free stuff" or sought to justify the theft.
Contrary to widespread speculation that rioters used social media to organise themselves and share "viral" information, sites such as Facebook and Twitter were not used in any significant way. However, BlackBerry phones – and the free messaging service known as "BBM" – were used extensively to communicate, share information and plan riots in advance.

Although mainly young and male, those involved in the riots came from a cross-section of local communities. Just under half of those interviewed in the study were students. Of those who were not in education and were of working age, 59% were unemployed. Although half of those interviewed were black, people who took part in the disorder did not consider these "race riots".
  15. What is your own opinion on the riots? Do you have sympathy with those involved or do you believe strong prison sentences are the right approach to prevent such events happening in future?

In my opinion i believe the police are in fault this would be because they handled the situation wrongly as to the widespread anger and frustration made. This was also the fault of people actions as people only did it too loot but the reason of poverty,

BBC risks excluding viewers by prioritising online content

BBC4 the bridge

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/13/bbc-risks-excluding-viewers-by-prioritising-online-content

BBC3 move to online-only, fears over future of traditional broadcasting and corporation being too ‘overtly political’ among public’s concerns, study finds. This article is explaining if BBC is too over political or if they have to much for entertainment. This explains as to the point of where BBC3 move on-line that it has now made the fears as to the reason of whether there audience may be going as its a free broadcaster and it would mean that if they show more of the entertainment side they would have to change to a paying broadcaster. This would be an issue as for their viewers who don't pay for any of the subscription would  mean that they would have to pay for one in the future as to the content that BBC does.

1. Some respondents also fear that poorer people (particularly children) and those in rural communities who do not have internet access at home will also miss out on online content.”

2. Some older people feel excluded’
On the issue of older members of the audience, the document notes: “Generally, older people express concerns at what they see as the prioritisation of online content over traditional broadcasting.

3. n the World Service, the report observed: “The most controversial aspect of the service is how it is funded and a fairly common view is it should continue to be funded by the British government, rather than licence fee payers.”

In my opinion BBC need to stay as a public service broadcaster as to the TV license paying it off. This is a problem for the BBC as they're having reports of having too much entertainment then too much political news. they should be freely open on what to do. BBC’s own proposals to create a “British, bold and creative” broadcaster. This was mean to show that BBC are a form of Entertainment for everyone in Britain. While the trust initially suggested that licence fee payers were supportive of the management’s plans, further analysis of the consultation showed many had widespread concerns on a range of issues. This could mean that BBC viewers may decrease.

Top Gear relaunch faces potential clash with new ITV motoring show

Chris Evans

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/14/top-gear-relaunch-faces-potential-clash-with-new-itv-motoring-show-rival

Top Gear has now got a new rival as to the launch of Chris Evan's take on the original BBC2 motoring show. ITV has announced details of its new show, The Drive, in which eight celebrities will compete against each other in a series of races and vehicles. This is article is about  that there is a new driving TV series going to happen and it could potential be a big clash with Top gear. This is a big rival as Top Gear are in struggle of losing original hosts and also there producer.

1. TV’s show will use a knockout format that will culminate in a final involving a race with Formula 4000 racing cars. The programme is being made by TwoFour Productions, the company behind Splash! and The Hotel Inspector.

2. The five-part series, hosted by Vernon Kay with former professional driver Jason Plato offering expert advice, is expected to air by the summer.

3. Evans, who is filming scenes for the show in the US, admitted the hectic schedule and pressure to reinvent the programme had been a “baptism of fire, to say the least”.

In my opinion this could be a problem for Top Gear ratings to go down as people are losing interest as to losing their producer and the three main hosts they use to have. Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. This was what people wanted and now Top Gear could be going through a problem this show is at the same time. This could also mean that we will get different ranges of driving T.V shows but it would also mean that its opportunity for the new show coming in.

Netflix, Spotify and Apple power UK entertainment revenue to record £6.1bn

Adele helped British CD sales experience the smallest rate of decline in a decade.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/06/netflix-spotify-apple-uk-entertainment-revenue-adele
Sales of Adele’s 25 slow decline in music sales enough for music spending to rise for the first time in at least a decade. UK revenue from music, TV shows, films and video games hit an all-time high of £6.1bn in 2015 thanks to the booming popularity of digital services offered by players including Netflix, Amazon, Spotify and Apple. The digital revolution was also felt in the UK music industry where the number of streams rose a staggering 82% year-on-year which resulted in an estimated 50% rise in streaming revenues to £251m, hauled the total UK music sales market to its first growth in at least a decade, up 3.5% to £1.06bn. This article explains that new digital media is growing larger and it made a big rise in 2015 for the music and entertainment industry.

1.Ed Sheeran tops the most streamed artist list, which boasts five British acts in the top 10 including One Direction and Sam Smith.

2.The total UK games market saw sales rise by 10% to £2.8bn. Digital sales from online and mobile services accounted for most of this growth, rising 17% to £1.9bn. Physical sales of games fell 2.2% to £927m.

3.The rise in popularity of paying for TV content from the likes of Netflix, Apple’s iTunes, Sky Store and Amazon Prime fuelled a 30% surge in digital video revenues to top £1bn for the first time (£1.09bn).

In my opinion i think this is a good article explaining the rise of new digital media and the growth of the industry. It gives the idea that new digital media is growing and it could be bigger over the years coming. I believe that it will be bigger in 2016 and will keep going higher to the point where the billion pounds will be a big estimated hit. This shows streaming online is become a big source for entertainment and for music this would be also good for games as you can download them on a console. Spotify and Netflix are good for entertainment and it would be growing more with there new changes happening as to being available to different countries.

Why Twitter would be right to expand to 10,000 characters – in 10,000 characters

The BBC TV show Sherlock TV - perfect topic for a Twitter rant, Leigh Alexander argues. “Every few tweets will be from this one person, a finely-carved holiday slice of whatever potent thing they are thinking or feeling in front of their instantaneous platform with no respect for brevity...”

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jan/05/why-twitter-is-right-to-expand-to-10000-characters

The article is about expanding the twitter characters to at least 10,000 characters meaning it would be longer than a page. This is change would be massive as to the favourite icon changing to the heart it is a change that no one would really know how to react. This article would be explaining about the reaction and how long twitter would be changed as to people have no limits as they could write how ever long they wanted. They use examples of arguments and debates and that it could include how it would help. The article questions if 10,000 characters are too much to be used. The article overall is about the advantages and disadvantages of this idea.

1. Veteran commentator Jeff Jarvis is less keen on Twitter busting out of 140 characters. And here’s why – in 140 characters: Articles (with ads) embedded in tweets a click & an instant away? Good. Tweets as endless essay? Bad, very bad. Very, very, very, very bad!!

2. The Guardian has asked me to fill 10,000 characters here, and I am only about halfway there at this point. No one on Twitter is really going to use all 10,000, are they? The average user might only maybe want to add a couple extra lines, or a couple extra paragraphs, right? After all, Twitter can give us all the space in the world, but I’m guessing there will still be a fundamental resistance to change when it comes to user behaviour.

In my opinion i think they need to expand the characters is a good idea for twitter but it would be too much if it was 10,000 because it would be essay's on a social networking site. This would be long to read and it would be very time consuming. This would be a good idea but they're has to be a shorter character limit so it would be atleast a paragraph nothing more than a page.

Dad’s Army episode A Stripe for Frazer: the animated Mainwaring, Wilson and Frazer

he BBC is to release a lost episode of Dad’s Army as an animation after uncovering an audio recording of the programme. A Stripe For Frazer, aired once in 1969 and went missing along with two other episodes as many tapes of programmes from the era were either recorded over or discarded.A high quality audio recording of the episode was recently discovered, and the BBC has now created an animated version of the story. This article is about the old TV series which was big hit in the late 1960s. This is for the older audience who around 50-60 years old as to when they use to watch this.

1.“As the UK renews its love affair with Dad’s Army we’re delighted to be bringing fans an exclusive chance to buy this brilliant lost episode which has been missing from the Dad’s Army portfolio for nearly half a century,” said Jonathan Green, director of BBC Store.

2. In the runup to Christmas, BBC2 aired We’re Doomed! The Dad’s Army Story, a comedy drama about the trials and tribulations of getting the comedy series onto TV in the 1960s, which drew 2.7 million viewers.

3. A feature film is going to be released soon.

In my opinion I believe it is good that they're bringing fan favourite television shows back as to the reason of the older demographic audience. This will make new fans aswell to watch the old ones and it would mean that it can be a good raise for the new film they will be making gaining more fans for their older work.

Netflix announces it will launch in 130 more countries

Reed Hastings, co-founder and CEO of Netflix, delivers a keynote address at CES about the expansion.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jan/06/netflix-availability-country-added-china-english-north-korea-ces

Netflix announced Wednesday that it’s launching in an additional 130 countries, making the streaming service available in almost every country, with the notable exception of China. The service will largely be in English in the new countries, supported by subtitles. The company is adding Arabic, Korean and both traditional and simplified Chinese to the roster of 17 languages it already supports. This article is about the expansion of Netflix be global to different countries and being able to be in different languages. Reed Hashtag is the man in the image as he is the CEO of Netflix. 'The company says that the public will gladly pay a fair monthly price to have access to movies and shows, and this can have a dramatic effect on the amount of illegally downloaded material.' This is an example of easy streaming and would mean that illegal downloading would be going down.

1. Netflix’s ongoing success is about flexibility. It supports almost every mobile phone OS, works on any computer, and is available on smart TVs and other hardware platforms.

2. This is in stark contrast to most TV broadcasters or other streaming services, like Amazon Video, which seems to delight in preventing people from seeing its content and movies.

3. he focus of the CES news conference was mostly on how Netflix has revolutionised TV delivery. Crucially, the company is pushing forward with significant new home grown shows, like The Crown, a drama focusing on the changing face of the British monarchy.

In my opinion this is just an act of bringing Netflix up in the ranks. For example the more Netflix will be used they will start showing live performances and could be another way of watching TV. There is also the advancement of Television as to Smart T.V which is another way just to on Netflix or different apps making it a very useful app.

WhatsApp blocked in Brazil for 48 hours by court

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/dec/17/whatsapp-blocked-brazil-48-hours-facebook

This article explains Brazil has blocked Facebook’s WhatsApp messaging app, preventing users in the country from connecting to service or sending messages. This would be because whatsapp did not respond to the court which was happening and therefore there was no service for 48 hours. There is another article about the judge saying it was to unfair as to doing this to the people where the ban was gone.

1. The first criminal court of São Bernardo do Campo said in a statement: “WhatsApp did not respond to a court order, dated 23 July, 2015. On 7 August , 2015, the company was notified again of being subject to fixed penalty in case of non-compliance.”

2. WhatsApp has more than 900 million daily active users globally, of which 93 million live in Brazil.

3. 86% of Brazilians have used WhatsApp, while other research points to more than 90%, making it the most used app in the country above Facebook.

Whatsapp is a big messaging service that people rely on as its quick than normal texting and it has shown this. If Brazil really got rid of this there would be big problems as to quick messaging would not be quick and the problem is that if the whataspp did not respond to to the court order they would have to do something. How ever the method of banning it for 48 hours would be a big problem because people other lives have to message and have the right to that. One man shouldnt be the cause of blocking the messaging app.

Has social media ruined the web?

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/dec/31/has-social-media-ruined-the-web

An Iranian blogger thinks the rise of social media is killing the potential of the web. Is he right? The article is explaining the internet and that has social media ruined the web as to what we communicate with. This Iranian blogger was in prison in 2008 and when he got out in 2014 it showed that technology had advanced over time. During his time in prison, the rise of smartphones and apps had changed the online world. Blogging and independent websites had been overtaken by social media networks, with the likes* of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram dominating the market.

In my opinion this article is short to give tips on but its the belief that social media is where we get our information and talk. This article see it as the opportunity to describe the social media world as like Walmart where we pick what we want. This is a discussion on where people believe if the internet is actually ruined or not and this article does favour that we have developed but also that we care more about celebrities where we used to use the internet just for information and statistics. But this can be argued as a point given it helps people day to day to communicate and have a blog.

2) Develop examples of the impact that new and digital media has had on News Corp’s brands (paywalls, readership figures, audience share etc.)

With new and digital media News Corp's brands like The Times have a paywall and this was already having a pay wall which was a positive impact on for the company to make the same amount of money from their readers. However The Sun did this too late and they have gone down as to they use to have at least 3 million readers 5 years ago, now they are up 1.8 million readers which would show that they added the paywall at the wrong time. A strong impact to News Corp's brand would be SKY GO which was an online service and provided news and entertainment for audiences which boosted there rates of viewership as they had it on the go and could watch on an digital device which led to not needing a TV license and also this was only if had SKY.

3) Use what you have found out about News Corp to answer the following question:
Why and with what success are traditional media institutions adapting to the challenge posed by new/digital media?

The Times and The Sun have adapted but in very different paths where you have the positive of The Times as to starting with the paywall and having well a different demographic audience. Going into digital media is good because it stills gives the service. However you have The Sun which shown to be different, for example their demographic is working class and mostly for C2DE. They have to go through the challenge of getting their readership as to what it used to be like 3 million readers. Now News corp brands have successfully come up with ideas on how to keep going but they have made sacrifices like making the Sun Paywall which had not done well. The challenge they largely face is that there is news which is free and high standard and this is the struggle in the modern life for new digital media as it is making news seem worthless to the news brands.
