NDM News case study: Audience and Institution

1) Read this extract from the Ofcom 2014 report on the consumption of news in the UK. What are the key statistics relating to the influence of new and digital media?
News
In the UK 95% say they follow the news. 75% say they use TV as their main source for news as this had decreased 78% in 2013. In 2013 people watched total of 115 hours of national and international news on television and it was the same year before. The main channels used was BBC One and BBC two however, ages 16-24 only consumed 27 hours of the news on television compared to 55 and over which watched over 196 hours.

Digital media
The key statistics would be the growth in the number of people who use internet and apps for news and it has gone to 41% in 2014. This has grown as last year in 2013 it was 32% showing that the views for On-line news is getting popular. For age group 16-34 the use internet and apps for news has increased as in 2013 it was 44% to 60% in 2014. In 2013 it has increased that people use the internet or apps as their main source using their digital device. It was 14% in 2013 and now increased to 21% in 2014. The ages of 16-24 say that the most important news source for them are website and apps.

2) Come up with an example of an institution that has benefited from the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. Explain how new technology has helped the institution and try to find statistics or financial figures that support your point.

Sky in my opinion has been beneficial as to the reason of traditional media like newspapers have gone down people use their digital devices and go on sky news or use sky go. Financially they are pretty balanced but at the start they didn't make alot as in 1997 it made £288 million and in 2014 it made £865 million. This shows the increase that Sky has got beneficial from this. Even though that was the whole of SKY I believe that it has increased as to the people who use there phones and also the content SKY has such as sports news and also it gives alerts to the audience of what they want to know.It has 24 hour news which is beneficial to people who can use any device. Also it makes money from its broadband and you get the app SKY GO which funds it as well.

3) Find an example of an institution that has suffered as a result of the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. In what way has it had a negative impact? Again, try and find actual statistics or financial figures to explain your point.

In my opinion I believe that The Sun has been suffering as its traditional print of news has been declining. This would be the reason of new technology devices and also the cost of news online which is free. The negative impact is that people will focus more online and for The SUN they could still keep going but wont make alot as from the research made they have been going down in numbers. As in 2009 it was making £3.5 million and now in 2015 its barely hitting £ 2 million this would hit the point to say that maybe The Sun might not make what it used to as people are too trusted in digital media and it wont be the same as how easy it is just to get out their phones.
4) Answer the following question in a mini-essay on your blog:
Who has benefited most from the changes new and digital media have had on the news industry - audiences or institutions?

In my opinion I believe that audience has benefited the most as from going online to just search news is free. In traditional print methods we would have to pay and that something people wouldn't like but now online its free. It has evolved where we can use our digital devices to read, watch and listen to the news and its on the go. It has benefited as to audience can now encourage the youth as to using apps like Snapchat as they have daily mail on there. Another part would be that we are Journalists as to we can record anything we see and put on the internet where people will see it as news and it will trend worldwide.  The change of the news industry has evolved from where they use give newspapers to where now audience from a click of a button can get the information they want.

The news come in any form you want now, Social media, Blogs, vlogs and also pod-casts. However the difference is that we have lessened censorship as to we are letting as have more graphic content as to the reporter shooting himself or the kid washed away in a different country. It has turned to a point where we can get out news but it has also changed use to be okay with seeing this graphic content. But the main reason would say keeps us intrigued by this is we need news and it just makes us want to read it more of what happen.

Facebook joins YouTube in showing 360-degree videos – including Star Wars

Facebook joins YouTube in showing 360-degree videos – including Star Wars

Facebook will now show 360-degree videos in its news feed across devices.

Facebook put 360 degree videos and have a star wars version. Viewers can use there mouse to look around the video as its the new effect of the video. partners for its launch, including Star Wars, Discovery, GoPro, Vice, Saturday Night Live and basketball star LeBron James. This would be to make Facebook more interesting as youtube does this as well. This would show the two media platforms can be used. Facebook want move forward with this launch as with the Oculus rift spending around $2bn. This can also be used for phones when moving around.

1. Facebook and youtube do this as well as they're typing to make it big it comes in 720p videos
2. Facebook did videos like star wars while moving around and many other videos
3. Youtube did it first then Facebook did it 6 months later

In my opinion i think its good that they're moving forward with Facebook and Youtube videos. Its a good effect as to the reason of actually seeing around you in a video. It makes it fun and new to use as its for the users to be entertained. The disadvantage is the movement as what if you just want to be still and see a normal video.

US government hack stole fingerprints of 5.6 million federal employees

US government hack stole fingerprints of 5.6 million federal employees

Fingerprint

The article is about how the US government got hacked and stole 5.6 million federal employees finger prints. This started only as 1.1 million as to what the government was thinking that got hacked but it was actually 5.6 million. The US believe it could be china as the one who's doing this as there is no evidence. However the US government have fired the director of security as to the fault of what happened. The theft of this information could find our about the spies and the secrecy of the United States. For some reason the Republicans thought that this is a PR matter and not a threat to the country. The director of national security however is trying to sort this out but US believes that over the years people might use this.

1. 1.1 million finger prints were only thought to be hacked out of the federal employees. US believes China is responsible about this.
2. Barack Obama is having a meeting with the president of China Xi Jinping with the cyber security
3. This could lead to many problems in the security department of the US government. For example they can find employees and find the US government intelligence HQ

In my opinion that this could be a threat to the US government and need to find out whos done this as its lives of so many federal employees. This could be a threat to them as they are just doing there job for the nation. This would be an effect on the US as its information on every spy or agent in the CIA and they could also get people in to work for them and it should be shown as a threat that could happen but first Obama should talk to the president of china.

    The impact of Google

Read this article looking at the impact Google has had on the traditional newspaper business.

    Answer the following questions:

    1) Why has Google led to the decline of the newspaper industry?
It would be because of the point that you can search anything on Google and it gives you the information. This would mean the decline in the newspaper industry because stories and what people can look for are in the internet. The reason of this would be because we are journalist as long as we have a phone and internet we can say anything we want on the internet.
  • 2) Do you personally think Google is to blame for newspapers closing and journalists losing their jobs? Why?
I personally think that Google has changed the industry of newspapers and print as people don't buy them as they got digital devices. But you do have users who still use tradition media as print and yes I do believe that journalists lost there jobs to the internet because we are journalists now we observe and give out opinion on what we see. I think Google shouldn't be the one to blame as they're other sources like yes you can search on Google but they're websites, blogs and even youtube a more visual way to get news.
  • 3) Read the comments below the article. Pick one comment you agree with and one you disagree with and justify your opinions in detail.

Google sold us a bill of goods, like any other corporate blood suckers.

This comment is interesting because I could agree with it its a blood sucking industry with what's it developed such as Google play, Gmail and Google maps which lots of people use. Google has taken many jobs away because of what it does as technology has evolved. I agree with this because its true they make content for people so they can get their money to grow again in other ideas.

However I would disagree with this comment as for example Google has gone with times as technology is what we use for everything we could blame that its technology not search engines. Another reason would be that if Google wasn't even made it would be a different company and it would be the same deal and it would just go in a cycle. And they're right good give the content but always a price like with Google play you have to pay for the goods.

In my opinion i believe that Google is a bill of goods and just want take all money. I agree with this comment as Google is like any other company just want get money but my main thing is that they do take jobs and its not their fault entirely its that society have all become own journalists.

Apple wants the Apple TV to be a games console. But can it be trusted?

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/sep/12/apple-tv-games-console-can-it-be-trusted

From the article It is explaining from Apple TV launch which happen a few days ago can be used for gaming as you can stream it on your Iphone, Ipad or anything which is a Apple product. The Article explains that the billion dollar company can take down Nintendo in 3rd place in the gaming console world. This would be the games they have on IOS. Examples would be games like Crossy road, Project sword which is coming out soon. The reason they believe they can compete with Nintendo is because of the new feature which is 3D touch. The 3D touch feature allows more in a game such as changing weapons. Even though they have this feature in the article it also explains if apple can do it as a app can only hold up 200MB for a game and thats not good enough as a games have to hold Giga bites of data.

  1. Apple have done 18 rated games on apple TV with parental guidance even though the company has no controlling on apps like this they would like keep the rule that Sony and micro soft have.
  2. You dont need ask permission when making the game for Apple TV as they're less controlling  on what they put just if they follow the guide lines.
  3. Apple trying to add the feature of 3D touch to gaming to make it have attention of what it can do in the gaming world. Also they have used it many games as where it can help you in shooting games.
In my opinion I believe  that if Apple also went in the gaming business that it would take them a while to get to where Nintendo is. Nintendo has been big since the later 80's and grown from all the characters in games they have brought. Apple haven't given stories or big games just little apps which are addictive and can make more money and I'm not saying they wont be the top because of that but i believe it would just take time for them too. The business name would already make it to the top its just the content they would give.

Apple iPhone 6S and 6S Plus: faster processors, better cameras, 3D Touch

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/sep/09/apple-iphone-6s-6s-plus-event-processors-cameras-3d-touch

New versions of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

The article is about the Apple reveal of the Iphone 6s and the taller version being 6s plus. The information about the article are all the new features that the phone can do for example 3D touch which gives you a more in depth way of using phone just by holding a piece of information and many other parts like quickly seeing messages making them look unread still just like a reminder to see it. Also for adding new features they have improved the features such as the touch ID making it 2x faster. It also suppose be 70% faster performance and 90% graphics, the reason for this is because the new A9 chip they have in the Iphone 6S's.

Key points:
  1. Iphone 6s are the first in the Iphone series to do 4K as many android phones do this now Iphone 6s do.
  2. The Iphone 6s will be the same cost as the last Iphone 6 being up to £539 going up and for the plus £619 going up.
  3. The camera has also improved by having amber lighting making pictures better to take at night and it is also improved by megapixels now having 12MP and also having effect if when hold the picture it can be a 30 second video.
In my opinion I'm not an Iphone fan but the improvements look good as to being a faster processor and also for the new metal body there using. Another view i would say about the Iphone is that the important factor of a phone is the battery and they dont really explain if they're going fix it and try make it a bigger battery that the phone can take. Also the price is way too much obviously people will buy them but now android are being top of the market with phones like LG G4 and the Samsung Galaxy series which is doing really well and the Samsung Note.
